Discrimination and Harassment

The Department of Equity and Civil Rights Compliance, in keeping with Emory University’s Equal Opportunity and Discriminatory Harassment Policy (Policy 1.3), is responsible for addressing complaints of discrimination, discriminatory harassment and retaliation filed by students, faculty and staff members.

Policy 1.3 ensures Emory University's compliance with federal civil rights laws, such as Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act, that prohibit discriminatory conduct in the workplace and academic environment. Policy 1.3 defines discrimination, discriminatory harassment, and retaliation, and outlines how one can file a complaint with DECRC.

Discrimination and harassment are distinct from bias, which is not prohibited by Emory Policy 1.3. While the university's Open Expression Policy broadly covers expressions of opinion on social or political issues, even controversial ones, conduct that is discriminatory is not protected by Open Expression.
